Definition
The European handicap (also called 3-way handicap) is a betting market that assigns a whole-number goal advantage or disadvantage to a team while retaining three possible outcomes: home win, draw, or away win after the handicap is applied. It is the standard handicap format offered by most European bookmakers.
How It Works
Unlike the Asian handicap, the European version uses only whole numbers (-1, -2, +1, +2) and always presents three results to bet on. The handicap is added to the selected team's score, and you then wager on the adjusted 1X2 outcome. Because there are three outcomes instead of two, the bookmaker's margin is typically higher than on Asian handicap markets.
Example
Arsenal vs Chelsea, Arsenal handicap -1, odds: 1 (1.80) / X (3.50) / 2 (4.20)
- Arsenal wins 3-1: adjusted score 2-1 -- "1" bet wins
- Arsenal wins 2-1: adjusted score 1-1 -- "X" bet wins
- Arsenal wins 1-0: adjusted score 0-0 -- "X" bet wins
- Draw 1-1: adjusted score 0-1 -- "2" bet wins
Why It Matters
European handicaps offer higher odds than Asian handicaps because the third outcome (the draw after handicap) absorbs part of the probability. This makes them attractive for bettors who can accurately predict margins of victory. However, the extra outcome also means higher bookmaker margins and more risk. For pure value, Asian handicaps are generally preferred, but European handicaps remain popular for accumulators and where exact scoreline analysis gives you an edge.
